Other Miscellaneous Needs

In addition to the specifics goals of the district association, they have determined other needs that will improve the quality of life in the area.  These needs can be broken down into five categories:
Community Improvements
  • Picking up garbage and overall beautification would be significant improvements.  A particular area in desperate need of cleaning up is the hill area just south of Byron Place.
  • More entertainment.
  • More children activities, especially in the summer. This would keep children off the streets and involved in productive, non-destructive activities.
  • Reestablishment of the inner-city baseball league.
  • Improve parks system.  Develop a system where patrons would be able to check out horse shoes, volleyball, basketball or other play equipment by using a drivers license as collateral.
  • Projects to move traffic efficiently, and to beautify the periphery streets, i.e. Grand Traverse, Court and West Second are desirable.
  • Green belt development along Grand Traverse, Court and West Second Streets.

  • More efficient movement of traffic through the area.
  • Improving the flow of traffic to I-69 and I-475.

Infrastructure
  • A survey of infra-structure in the entire area would be in order.  Aspects to investigate should be the conditions of such things as:

         - streets, sewers, water, gas, electric, and telephone lines.

This survey should determine the future physical condition of the utilities over the next 10 to 30 years.  Up-to-date utilities are essential for establishing a viable downtown as a growth area.  So-called "smart buildings" should be encouraged.  This means the ability to hook into fiber optics, upgraded electrical facilities, adequate sewers, utilities, and paved, well maintained streets.
