Background Information*

The Flint Journal newspaper has been serving the Genesee County and surrounding areas since 1876.  The newspaper is currently replacing obsolete production equipment and plans on housing the new equipment on a new site in what is being called "The Flint Journal Modernization Project".  The location of the new site will be just to the east of the Journals' current building located on first street.  Even more important than locating the new facility in the downtown Flint area, the Journal will locate this facility on currently abandoned land that has been termed a brownfield.   Brownfields are sites of environmental contamination or sites that are perceived to be environmentally contaminated.  In this case, the land is considered "Functionally Obsolete", meaning that the property is unable to be used to adequately perform the function for which it was intended due to a substantial loss in value resulting from factors such as overcapacitity, changes in technology, deficiencies or superadequacies in design, or other similar factor that affect the property itself or the property's relationship with other surrounding property.  The Flint Journal has a long track record of supporting the downtown Flint area and locating this new facility in the City of Flint continues to demonstrate the newspapers dedication to the City.
