Background Information

The Flint Cultural Center, established in 1957 by community leaders, is located in a unique, 30-acre, campus-like setting, east of downtown Flint and consisting of nine diverse cultural institutions. Four of those - Bower Theater, Longway Planetarium, Sloan Museum and Whiting Auditorium (home of the Showcase Series, Flint Symphony Orchestra and Once Upon A Time Series) - have been run by the Flint Cultural Center Corporation since 1994, a nonprofit management group that is responsible for all the land and buildings. Also located in the Center are the Flint Institute of Arts, the Flint Institute of Music, the Flint Public Library, Sarvis Center (part of Flint Schools) and Flint Youth Theatre - also a program of Flint Community Schools. In 1999 and 2000, the Cultural Center made major renovations to the James H. Whiting Auditorium interior and expansions to the Bower Theater and Longway Planetarium.  In addition to these improvements, more improvements have recently been approved for Longway Planetarium, Bower Theater, Whiting Auditorium, Sloan Museum and Durant Plaza.
